I was clued into this site by @verabee on twitter. It's a great reference/life drawing tool that some awesome soul has put together. http://www.pixelovely.com/gesture/figuredrawing.php

You can go there, and do gesture drawing for free. Lots of images, some nude, or fully clothed.

I did each of the following poses in Flash as a test, to see how I like to draw in that app. it's ok. The point is to get down the gesture as solid as possible. I'm definitely rusty at this, but I'm going to keep at it.

Review: The Princess and the Frog

I was more then impressed. Disney has another gem on its hands.
I had a lot of expectations going into this, and I was definitely satisfied. The story was not outstanding, but it was respectable. I really liked Facilier. The love story was not the best, felt a little quick, but hey, girl’s gotta get the guy in the end.

The animation and art direction were superb, and really shows that when done well, 2d has little competition when it comes to movie magic.

I’ll be seeing it a second time for sure, just to catch the inside animation jokes/cameos.

By the way, its not slime it’s MUCUS!

A small trip down memory lane, specifically to the summer of 1987. My dad and I took a trip through the northeast US to New York City, Boston Mass, and other places in connecticut if I remember correctly. We went to the usual touristy places, like the Empire State building, the Museum of Natural History, and a couple others I don’t remember too well.

The highlight of the trip for me was a Yankees vs. Red Sox game at Fenway Park. The game was a meaningless June contest during a losing season for the Sox, but it was my first professional baseball game, and one that I remember fondly.

As you can see in the picture, I sat behind home plate in that general area, I remember being close or behind one of the poles supporting the overhead area. I don’t recall much of the actual game, or which one it was during the 3 game home-stand by the Red Sox but I remember the fans getting rowdy and drunken cursing each other, until they saw me and realized that their language was a little too much for children’s ears. They apologized and apparently spent the remainder of the game trying to shag a foul ball for me. They also bought me a Sox cap, and my dad a beer or two. Talk about classy people.

That is why I’m still a Sox fan to this day. I root for them in the AL, and the Astros in the NL. Those are my teams, and I’ll remain a fan of both until I quit following baseball, which will probably be never.

two cool books I recently bought - a review.

Here is a short review of two cool books I received for my birthday in october.

Book Plate Betties by Bill Presing. Bill draws girls in the old pinup style of yesteryear, and he has a great eye. The pieces are all worthy of framing, but kept together in a book makes for a neat assortment of good girl art.

The Venice Chronicles by Enrico Casarosa. This is an instant classic tale of love and fun in Italy and other places. Drawn in Enrico's miyazaki-esque comic style, I first read this when Enrico had posted it on his blog for free. Now to have it in a bound page turning format is so nice.

They are both self published by the authors, and can be found on their blog/websites, which are both listed over to the right under cool places and things.

Thanks guys for inspiration.

I just watched the opening sequence of Aeon Flux, the animated show by Peter Chung. It still holds up as a very unique vision of animation.

Here is one of the shot's from the short sequence. Very memorable. I'll be viewing this site much more for inspiration.

In school related news...

I visited the new Art Institute of Austin today, for their open house for prospective students. Came away impressed with the facilities, and they have all the current technologies necessary for creating digital artwork. I am interested in trying their media arts and animation bachelor's plan, however, I don't know if it will fit what I want to do with it. I would like to put my focus on more 2d animation (classic disney, looney tunes, etc) then the 3d that is the industry standard. The reason they don't really do much 2d anymore, is that it has become pretty rare/lost artform. I know disney is making one full 2d animated movie The Princess and the Frog (Wiki) but beyond that the future seems pretty bleak. I have a few ideas for animation shorts, and I would like to try to do them the traditional way with drawing frame by frame, but I might not need $60,000 and 3 years of education to do it.

I have a one on one session with a rep in the admissions dept at AI next week. We shall see what they have to say.

If you are someone that prays to God for things, you could pray for blessing in the realms of direction and wisdom for pretty much every decision involved here.

This was found while retrieving my disc-golf frisbee from the dry creek bed in our local park. It measures 8in x 5in and is pretty hefty.

Les Triplettes de Belleville - A review

One of my favorite animation films produced in the last 10 years, is Silvain Chomet's Tripletts of Belleville. This is a great film that relies heavily on visuals and storytelling through pictures, and NOT dialogue or spoken words. Very refreshing in the modern animation world of over dialogue talk-fests that are the norm. My favorite character in the film is the waiter from the restaurant, pictured here.

It was nominated for an Animation Best Picture Oscar in 2004. Do yourself a favor if you like animation, and rent this from Netflix or Blockbuster.

You have to paint it backwards, with paint on one side of the cel, and the ink on the other - like they did it in the older days of animation.

New Looney Tunes tribute piece

I'm undertaking another large painting based on one of my favorite looney tunes cartoons. This time I'm tributing Bully for Bugs, which is my favorite bugs bunny cartoon.

Due to the poor quality of my digital camera and not having a scanner, here are a couple of work in progress pics. I'll keep documenting the progress as a work through this one.

Here is a large view, and a close up of bug's pose. I'll be painting this on cel, and the background like they did in the old days.

Why So Serious? A dark knight review.

I just saw the Dark Knight, finally after weeks of it being in theaters. My initial feeling was being overwhelmed by the movie. I did not love it, or hate it, but just felt that I had been exposed to a living presence of evil on screen, thanks to the bad guys in the film.

The performances of the Joker and Two-Face were the gruesome highlight for me. I really felt that they brought the darkness into those characters, and they stole the spotlight from the relatively boring performance by Christian Bale as Batman. Some of the gadgetry was pretty to look at, especially the bat vision sonar effect they pulled off, that was really cool. I also liked the motorcycle. Very manly.

I doubt that I'll go see the film again, at least not until the DVD release.

I am looking forwards to Watchmen. The trailer for that film really carries a tone that I felt from reading the original graphic novel.

This was by far the best short I've seen in a theater. The audience was laughing the whole time, and the gags were reminiscent of Looney Tunes which was GREAT!

This shows that even the short films at Pixar are worthy of Oscar gold. It would get my vote right now, if I had one to give. This is my second favorite Pixar short, the first being For the Birds.

The bar has been set once again. We'll see if anybody can compare.

Thought’s on Wall-E

The art direction, sound, and character design were all top-notch.

The cinematography was the best I’ve seen from Pixar yet. I was definitely drawn into the story, and even though it became a little “Green” preachy towards the end, I was not bothered that much. I also loved the end credit animation, especially the 8-bit stuff, which was unexpected and classic.

This movie will be added to my collection alongside all of the other Pixar films. Solid 5 of 5.
